I'm sure you have all heard this saying before - 'Sugar and spice and all things nice. That's what little girls are made of. Boys are made of snips and snails and puppy dog's tails.'
But does every boy go up wanting to fight dragons and to be the price charming? Is there such a pressure for boys to live up to the stereotype of masculinity?
Stories for boys who dare to be different by Ben Brooks is a book filled with tales of amazing boys who change the world without killing any dragons. It contains stories about incredible males from the past and today such as Ralph Lauren Roald Dahl, Tika Waititi and Daniel Radcliffe. It is a very similar take on heroism as the book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls is.
Being a mum of two young boys it is important to me to fill their minds and inspire them with all sorts of different things. Of course we all want our children to grow up and be happy and sometimes social pressures are put on them.Even at the young age my kids are, they play games like cops and robbers where they catch the baddies and put them in jail or they play superheroes.
It’s refreshing and inspiring to have a book for them that offers stories of different ways in which men are called a hero, even if they didn't fight a dragon.
We often sit and flick through the pictures of this beautifully illustrated book before bed and my son will pick the page I read to him. Who is that man? What is he famous for?
Be prepared for interesting conversations and meaningful chats that this book sparks as you flip through the pages at bedtime.
It a necessity for any house hold with a young boy in.
Will this be a book you would have on your bookshelf?
Lipstick and love! xx
