The Mental Workload Of A Mother

Every morning as I eat my breakfast I run through the days events ahead.

Library day for one child, music for the other, I need to collect a trade me purchase I made and my partner needs new work shoes. The days list of 8000 jobs plays over and over until I work out how I am going to do this all before nap time.

I am the stay at home mum in this house and that makes me the default CEO of the family and day to day momager. If I forget one kids fruit snack it's the five year old I answer to. Don't get me wrong, I love being a stay at home mum and being able to attend the assembly performances but it often leaves me wondering just how do mum's do it - being a mum myself and I cant even put into paper how we do it.

But everything falls on mum's shoulders. We look forward to having the other half home on weekends to help do the gardens or fix the shed but we are still in charge of feeding everyone, cooking, cleaning. These things don't stop on the weekend and affect our mental load.

As the end of each day falls we do everything we need to to make the next day run smoother. Pre pack lunch boxes, vacuum the floor so it's one less job for the morning, lay out everyone's clothes and check there is no fundraiser on at school the next day we haven't been told about.
As we get into bed we do one last check to make sure the kids are warm enough and comfortable. By the time we get into bed all we want to do is bingewatch the latest Jersey Shore episode but at 10pm at night it's time to switch off. Although increasingly hard to switch the brain off we know it's essential to get a few hours rest.

So here's to all the momagers. The stay at home mum's, the working mum's, the work from home mum's, the step mum's and the just - scraping - by mum's.

I see your mental load and just know that to the world you may be one person but to one small but sassy person you are their world.
